In Canada National Day of Mourning takes place on April 28, 2020. The National Day of Mourning is observed annually in Canada and sometimes called Workers Mourning Day. It commemorates workers who have been killed, injured or suffered illness due to workplace related hazards and incidents.
On June 18, 1935 violence on the Longshore picket line, instigated by police and goons on behalf of the Shipping Federation and their allies, became part of our history. That battle was lost but the war was won. The events of that day are a reminder of why militant solidarity should always remain at the core of the Union.
A permanent memorial stone no stands at New Brighton Park, where Longshore pensioners and workers will gather to recognize the events that eventually led to the formation of ILWU Canada. Join us to hear from speakers, to learn about the history of the Battle of Ballantyne, and build solidarity as we remember why we belong here.
Commemorate the Day at New Brighton Park, Tuesday, June 18 at 11 AM.
Nominations open Tuesday, October 15, 2024, 8 AM, and close on November 1, 2024 at 5 PM.
