Greenshield Transition

June 12, 2025

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The Benefit Plan Trustees made the decision to move to Greenshield in 2023. The main reason for this decision was to replace the software WEBC was using to process claims. The old system was no longer stable and could not be repaired because it was written with code that is no longer in use. Soon it would have been completely unusable. WEBC did an extensive search for software providers and chose Greenshield because they could provide all the solutions necessary to meet our complex requirements. Most benefits are still processed in-house, and we now have the ability to direct deposit payments, process claims quicker and check coverage online. We also have our own app and website to submit most claims electronically. There is also the ability for direct billing if your provider offers this service.

Pharmacy Markups:

Members have sometimes seen small charges on their prescriptions. These are often the result of the pharmacy charging members a markup beyond the amount allowed. Greenshield has agreements with pharmacies not to pass on these additional charges to the members, but the pharmacies do not always abide by these contracts. The simplest way to address these issues is to tell the pharmacist that our plan doesn’t have any co-pays or deductibles, and the extra charges should be reversed. The Trustees are working with Greenshield to address this issue.

Generic Substitution:

Generic substitution has been part of the plan for many years and helps control costs. Generic drugs contain the same active ingredients as the name brand drug at significantly lower cost. Sometimes members can have reactions to fillers and binding agents that are part of the formula. The plan will cover up to the cost of the generic. Members can apply for an exception by having their doctor fill out an adverse reaction form and sending it to Greenshield. Prior Authorization:

Prior authorization is also a standard policy for all drug plans in Canada. This ensures members meet the qualification for certain high-cost drugs such as biologics and biosimilars. These drugs also can have significant side-effects, so it is important for close medical supervision when starting on these medications. The Trustees are working with Greenshield to address any issues with the current prior authorization process.

Members having issues should contact WEBC by emailing extended health at claimservices@webc.ca, calling 604-689-7184 and pressing #2, or visiting the office at 400 – 349 Railway St.

All members should create an account on the new WEBC connect app or website. Find instructions at https://www.webc.ca/news/create-your-webc-connect-account/
