On June 18, 1935, striking dock workers marching down to the waterfront were met with mounted police and more on foot with clubs standing in line formation, protecting the strikebreakers and preventing the dock workers from forming a picket line. Confrontation ensued and many Longshore workers and supportive community members were beaten, trampled, and tear gassed by the cops. Two young supporters suffered gunshot wounds. Deemed “the bloodiest hours in waterfront history” by Vancouver’s The Province, we remember this historic struggle today as the Battle of Ballantyne Pier.
If you are not called back to or despatched by the Hall for the 0800 shift of June 18, 2025, you are expected to attend.
