FEDERAL ELECTION
APRIL 28, 2025
7AM to 7PM
*PLEASE NOTE THE ILWU 500 OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED AT 4 PM TO ALLOW ALL STAFF AND OFFICERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO VOTE*
The Canada Elections Act states that everyone eligible to vote is entitled to 3 consecutive hours between the opening and closing of Polls in which to cast their ballots.
Employees scheduled to start work after 10 AM, or finish by 4 PM will require no extra time off for voting.
However, those working the Day Shift at 8 AM should be released at 4 PM in order to meet time requirements provided by the Act.
The Canada Elections Act also states that the period granted is at the discretion of the employer, whether that means a late start, or early finish is the employers’ prerogative.
It is also clear in the Canada Elections Act that workers’ wages will not be deducted, nor will penalties be imposed for the time they are allowed for voting.
