WARNING! Port Passes to be Revoked

Please see the bulletin from December 31, 2010 on Port Pass Violations and Penalties.

The Union received communication from Port Metro Vancouver (PMV) Security that they wanted to see a warning/information notice coming from the Union rather than the Port starting to pull Port Passes from Longshore workers without notice.

PMV has already pulled the Port Passes of container truck drivers that violated Port safety rules.

The kind of violations that they are bringing to our attention are drivers entering the waterfront via the Clark overpass. We were shown video of a Longshore worker ignoring a signal person’s directions. We have also had Longshore workers videoed driving down the wrong side of the road to avoid congestion. These are all safety violations.

There are 400 cameras on the Port Road. Violators are recorded on video. After a violation occurs Port Security is sent out to investigate. They get a record of when the violator swiped their Port Pass and from that they get the violator’s name.

As these safety violations are not happening on terminals covered by the Collective Agreement, any action that a person might want to take to appeal the loss of their Port Pass would be on their own hook.

Heads up.
